The Job
A sole trader in New Malden (KT3), Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, had just finished stripping out a bathroom. What ended up kerbside was more than a bathroom clearance — it was a bathroom refurbishment plus accumulated builder's waste: timber, plasterboard, doors and bagged rubble from the surrounding work.
This is the kind of load that appears at the end of a real refurbishment, not a single-room strip. Why “Not Sure” Was the Right Answer
When the customer filled in the job form, they selected “not sure” for load size. That wasn't hedging — it was accurate. The load mixed at least five distinct waste types. Timber and plasterboard alone can't be estimated the same way as a pile of bags, because they're awkward shapes that stack inefficiently and compress unpredictably in a van.
Photos fixed this. The photos communicated volume and access better than any form field could — and they let carriers price in the complexity rather than guess.

Why Plasterboard Explains the Price Gap
The photos show plasterboard — sheets and offcuts from the bathroom refurbishment. That single waste type changes the economics for every carrier who bids, but not equally.
Regulatory fact
Plasterboard cannot be landfilled with mixed waste in the UK. Under the Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2002, gypsum (the mineral in plasterboard) must be separated and sent to a dedicated plasterboard recycling facility. When gypsum degrades alongside biodegradable waste, it releases hydrogen sulphide — a toxic gas. A carrier looking at these photos is pricing in a separate plasterboard drop. That extra disposal stop is the real explanation for a £150 spread.
The spread isn't random. Some carriers have a plasterboard recycling facility on their regular route — it costs them almost nothing to divert. Others don't, and a separate trip eats directly into margin. Add to that the fact that timber is cheap to tip and the bagged rubble is standard, and you get a load where carrier-specific disposal logistics dominate the price, not difficulty or distance.
Hackney: timing drove the gap
A same-afternoon collection inflated the top bid to £600 — a 100% premium for urgency. Remove that and the comparable spread is similar.
New Malden: logistics drove the gap
No urgent bids. All three carriers had similar timing. The £150 gap was carrier-to-carrier plasterboard disposal cost — a more “pure” market spread.
What this means for your job
If your load includes plasterboard, you won't know which carriers have easy access to a plasterboard facility and which don't — and there's no way to find out without making them compete. Getting three bids on a load like this costs nothing and surfaces the logistics gap directly.

Plasterboard changes the maths for every carrier differently
Some carriers have a plasterboard recycler on their regular route. Others don't. That gap in access — not greed, not difficulty — is why one carrier can bid £150 less than another on the exact same load.
A mixed load is always harder to estimate than a clean one
Timber, plasterboard, bags, doors and trellis each go to different waste streams. The customer couldn't give a precise cubic yardage because the load was genuinely complex. Three photos were the right solution.

The £150 difference here is less dramatic than Hackney's £300 gap, but it's still £150 saved for a two-minute job post. At that rate, it's the highest-return two minutes in any refurbishment.
