How do council garden waste collections work in London?
In most London boroughs, garden waste is not part of the standard rubbish and recycling round. It is an optional extra that you pay for separately, usually once a year. The council supplies a dedicated container and empties it on a fixed schedule while your subscription is live. If you haven't paid, the container is left. Southwark, for example, says brown bins without a valid subscription are not emptied.
Across south and south-west London you will find three broad models. The most common is a paid wheelie bin subscription, used by Sutton, Southwark, Hounslow and Richmond. Some councils use paid reusable sacks instead of bins. Hammersmith & Fulham does this, and it is a useful comparison just across the river. Wandsworth is the exception: it has no subscription at all. Instead it lets residents put a limited number of bags of garden waste out with their normal rubbish.
| Borough | Container | Frequency | Typical price | Subscription period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sutton | Council bin; as many as you need | Fortnightly (24 a year) | £99 per bin | 12 months from your first collection |
| Hounslow | Council container (check council site) | Check council site | £75 (£37.50 with Council Tax Reduction) | 1 Apr 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 |
| Richmond | 240-litre green bin with blue lid | Fortnightly | £51 for 6 months (£38 if 75+) | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 |
| Southwark | 240-litre brown bin or council paper sacks | Weekly | £80 (2024/25, latest confirmed) | Ends 31 March |
| Wandsworth | Your own bags, up to 5 a week | Weekly, with rubbish | Free | No subscription |
| Hammersmith & Fulham | Two 90-litre reusable sacks | Check council site | £90 a year | Check council site |
How much does council garden waste collection cost in south and south-west London?
Prices vary more than many people expect, and most councils review them every April. The figures below are typical published prices taken from each council's website (checked October 2026). Several boroughs still have older pages online showing previous years' charges, so confirm the price on your council's live sign-up page before you pay.
Council garden waste prices, south and south-west London
Sutton shows £99 per bin per year on its newest sign-up and renewal pages. That covers 24 fortnightly collections. You can have as many bins as you need and pay for each one. Older Sutton pages still show £88.30 and £86.54, which appear to be previous years' prices.
Hounslow charges £75 for the 2026/27 year, or £37.50 if you receive Council Tax Reduction. The fee is the same whenever you join, and there are no half-year or part-year prices.
Richmond is currently only selling a 6-month subscription, covering 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. It costs £51 if you are under 75 and £38 if you are 75 or over. If you don't already have the council's green bin with a blue lid, add £40 for one. An older Richmond page that refers to 2026/27 lists 12-month prices of £95 (under 75) and £71 (75 and over). We could not confirm whether the 12-month option reopens in April 2027, or at what price.
Southwark charged £80 for 2024/25 for weekly collection of one 240-litre brown bin. That is the most recent price we could confirm on the council's site. It had risen from £60 in 2023/24, and from £25–£30 when the service started in 2019. Wandsworth charges nothing because there is no subscription. Hammersmith & Fulham charges £90 a year for two reusable sacks.

How do I sign up for garden waste collection in Sutton, Southwark, Hounslow or Richmond?
Every borough with a subscription lets you join online. The details that catch people out are when the subscription starts, what container you need, and whether a late sign-up still costs the full year. Sutton's process is the most straightforward, because your year starts on the day of your first collection rather than on a fixed date.
Joining Sutton's garden waste service
- 1
Have a card and email ready
Sutton's sign-up is online only and needs a debit or credit card plus an email address.
- 2
Decide how many bins you need
You pay per bin, and there is no cap on the number of bins a household can have.
- 3
Pay online
Complete the sign-up form on Sutton's garden waste page. The price shown on the newest pages is £99 per bin.
- 4
Wait for your bins
Bins arrive within 10 days of payment. Your 12 months start on the day of your first collection, so you don't lose any time while you wait.
- 5
Put the bin out correctly
Have it out by 6am on collection day, at the edge of your property near the pavement but not on it.
Southwark offers an optional weekly collection of a 240-litre brown bin for homes with gardens. You can pay for more than one bin, but you can't pay for more than one year at a time. Subscriptions can't be refunded once they start, and the bin must not be stored on the pavement. Every subscription ends on 31 March, and the price was the same whenever you joined. If you'd rather not subscribe, you can buy Southwark's paper garden waste sacks and request a collection. It is usually on your normal collection day, but the council can't contact you in advance to confirm the date. If you need more cleared in one go, compare one-off garden waste removal in Southwark.
Hounslow runs a fixed subscription year from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Subscribe by 1 April to get a full 12 months of collections. If you join later, you still pay the full £75 and your subscription still ends on 31 March 2027. We could not confirm Hounslow's bin size, collection frequency or accepted materials, so check the council's subscription page. If you're dealing with a big clear-out rather than regular cuttings, see garden waste removal in Hounslow.
Richmond needs the council's 240-litre green wheelie bin with a blue lid. It no longer issues bin stickers. Crews use in-cab technology to see which homes have paid, so write your house name or number in large lettering on the side of the bin, not the lid. Commercial gardeners can't sign up. If you only have garden waste occasionally, you can buy council garden sacks and book a collection without subscribing.
In Wandsworth there is nothing to join; you simply bag the waste and put it out. If your Sutton garden produces more than you want to keep paying bins for, you can also compare one-off garden waste removal in Sutton.
What can and can't go in a council garden waste bin or sack?
The rules are broadly similar across boroughs. Soft, green, compostable material is accepted. Anything heavy, man-made or treated is refused. Southwark publishes the clearest list. Hammersmith & Fulham and Wandsworth add useful detail. Sutton, Hounslow and Richmond each publish their own lists, which we did not check for this guide, so read your council's page before you fill the bin.
Typical accepted and refused items (based on Southwark, Hammersmith & Fulham and Wandsworth rules)
Usually accepted
- Grass cuttings
- Hedge cuttings and prunings
- Leaves
- Flowers, old plants and weeds
- Twigs and branches (Southwark: up to 10cm across)
- Small amounts of fruit (Hammersmith & Fulham)
Usually refused
- Food waste (Southwark has a separate free food collection)
- Fencing and other wood
- Soil, rubble, stones and gravel
- Plastic bags
- Flower pots and trays
- Japanese knotweed (Wandsworth)
Containers matter as much as contents. Southwark only collects garden waste in its own brown bins or its own paper garden waste sacks. Plastic bags are on its refused list. Wandsworth takes garden waste in ordinary bags next to your rubbish. It won't collect garden waste put out in council-branded recycling sacks, or bags containing bricks, soil, rubble or stones.
It is also worth knowing where the waste goes. Wandsworth's free bag collection is incinerated to generate electricity, and the ash is recycled into cement. It isn't composted. Hammersmith & Fulham's sack collection goes to Smugglers Way in Wandsworth and is then composted by EnVAR. If composting matters to you, check how your borough treats garden waste. Composting at home is another option, and Southwark says residents can still do this.
When does the garden waste service renew, pause or stop for winter?
Renewal works in one of two ways. Some councils run everyone on a fixed year ending 31 March, so joining late costs the same but gives you fewer collections. Others run each subscription for 12 months from your first collection. Most also pause collections for a few weeks around Christmas so crews can deal with extra recycling and Christmas trees.
| Borough | How the year runs | Renewing | Winter pause |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sutton | 12 months from your first collection | Renew within 30 days before expiry for no gap in service | Four weeks over the festive period (29 Dec 2025 – 23 Jan 2026 last winter); 2026/27 dates not confirmed |
| Hounslow | Fixed: 1 Apr 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 | Subscribe by 1 April for a full 12 months | Not confirmed – check council site |
| Richmond | 6-month option: 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 | Direct Debit payers renew automatically | Two weeks in January; next pause 4–15 Jan 2027 |
| Southwark | Ends 31 March each year | Reminder by email, or leaflet if no email held; renewals have historically opened in early March | Not confirmed – check council site |
| Wandsworth | No subscription | Nothing to renew | No subscription to pause |
In Sutton, renewing inside the 30-day window before expiry keeps collections running without a gap. If you let the subscription lapse, Sutton removes all garden waste bins. It may also charge for repairing or replacing bins that are damaged or defaced, so keep your house number on the bin rather than graffiti or heavy stickers.
In Southwark and Hounslow, everything ends on 31 March whenever you joined. Southwark subscriptions are non-refundable once started, and Hounslow has no part-year prices. Joining in late autumn means paying a full fee for a short spell of collections. Richmond is the exception here, because it currently sells a 6-month subscription for the October to March period. Richmond collects all year apart from two weeks in January.
What if my garden waste won't fit in the council bin?
A single 240-litre bin suits steady, regular gardening. It struggles after a hedge cut, a tree surgeon's visit, or an overgrown garden at a rental or probate property. You have several options. Which one is best depends on how much waste there is, what it is made of, and whether this is a one-off.
Add another bin or sack subscription
Sutton lets you have as many bins as you need, paying per bin. Southwark lets you pay for more than one bin. Hammersmith & Fulham allows up to four subscriptions (eight sacks) per property. This works if the extra volume will continue all season.
Buy council sacks for occasional overflow
Southwark sells paper garden waste sacks with collection on request. Richmond sells council garden sacks you can book for collection without subscribing. Check the current sack price on the council site.
Use Wandsworth's allowance and bulky service
Wandsworth takes up to five bags a week with your rubbish. For more, its bulky collection gives two free collections a year (up to four items or 12 sacks). After that it costs £24.90 for up to four items and £11.10 per extra item, and three garden waste sacks count as one item (checked October 2026).
Compost at home
Grass, leaves and soft prunings can go into a home compost bin, which Southwark explicitly encourages. This won't help with branches or bulk volumes, but it takes pressure off the bin.
Take it to the tip
Council reuse and recycling centres accept garden waste from residents. Check vehicle rules first (see the tip section below).
Book a one-off removal
For a large load, or for materials the council refuses such as old fencing or soil, a licensed waste carrier can clear everything in one visit. See the London garden waste removal guide for how this works.
For borough-specific help with larger loads, see garden waste removal in Wandsworth and garden waste removal in Richmond.
Is a council subscription cheaper than a one-off garden waste removal?
They solve different problems, so the cheaper option depends on your garden. A council subscription is a fixed annual fee for a regular, modest flow of green waste that you sort and load yourself. A one-off removal is priced per job. It suits a large volume, mixed materials, or a garden you won't be maintaining all year, such as a property being cleared for sale or a new tenancy.
Council subscription vs one-off removal
Council subscription
- Fixed yearly fee (£75–£99 per bin in Hounslow and Sutton, checked October 2026)
- Regular collections, weekly or fortnightly depending on borough
- You fill the bin yourself, at your own pace
- Only takes accepted materials, and only what fits
- Fixed-year boroughs charge the full fee however late you join
One-off removal
- Clears a large load in a single visit
- Can include items the council refuses, such as fencing or soil, if described in the job
- Price depends on volume, access and waste type
- The carrier does the loading
- The carrier must issue a waste transfer note
For context on what one-off jobs cost, here are figures from all jobs posted on RubbishBids between 14 April and 9 September 2026. They cover every job type, not just garden waste, so treat them as a general guide rather than a garden waste price list.

Bids across 83 jobs
RubbishBids jobs, 14 Apr – 9 Sep 2026, all job types
£200
Median bid
RubbishBids jobs, 14 Apr – 9 Sep 2026

RubbishBids jobs, 14 Apr – 9 Sep 2026

Median spread, lowest to highest bid
On jobs with 2+ bids, 14 Apr – 9 Sep 2026
The spread figure is the practical point. On jobs with more than one bid, the highest bid was typically 50% above the lowest. That is why comparing bids for a single job can matter. For garden-specific figures and what drives the price, see garden waste removal costs in London.
Can I take garden waste to the tip instead?
Yes, in the boroughs we checked, residents can take garden waste to a council reuse and recycling centre. Southwark residents can use the borough's reuse and recycling centre. Wandsworth residents can use the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Smugglers Way. Hammersmith & Fulham says its residents can take garden waste to Smugglers Way free of charge. We did not check the tip rules for Sutton, Hounslow or Richmond for this guide, so look up opening times, booking and vehicle rules on your council's website before you set off.
The tip is a good fit when the load fits in a car and you have time to make the trip. Branches and bags of cuttings are bulky, so a big hedge cut can mean several runs. Material that is heavy or refused by the council bin, such as soil or old fencing, may need to go in a different area of the site, or be handled differently. Ask the site staff before you unload. For more ways to deal with cuttings, compost and bulky loads, read what to do with garden waste.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Sutton garden waste collection?
Sutton's newest sign-up and renewal pages show £99 per bin per year (checked October 2026). That covers 24 fortnightly collections. You can have as many bins as you need, paying for each one. Older council pages still show £88.30 and £86.54, so confirm the figure on the live sign-up page before paying. Bins arrive within 10 days of payment, and your year starts from the first collection.
How do I get garden waste collection in Southwark?
Southwark offers an optional weekly collection of a 240-litre brown bin for homes with gardens, which you sign up for online. The latest price we could confirm was £80 for 2024/25. Subscriptions end on 31 March, can't be refunded once started, and can't be paid more than a year ahead. You can also buy council paper sacks and request a collection instead.
How much is Hounslow garden waste collection?
Hounslow charges £75 for the 2026/27 subscription year, or £37.50 if you receive Council Tax Reduction (checked October 2026). The year runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. Join late and you pay the full fee, but it still ends on 31 March, because there are no part-year prices. Subscribe by 1 April for a full 12 months.
Is garden waste collection free anywhere in south London?
Wandsworth has no garden waste subscription. Residents can put out up to five bags of compostable garden waste each week next to their normal rubbish, free. It isn't collected in council-branded recycling sacks or if it contains bricks, soil, rubble or stones, and it doesn't cover Japanese knotweed. The waste is incinerated to generate electricity, not composted.
Can I join a council garden waste service partway through the year?
Yes, but check how the year runs. Hounslow and Southwark end every subscription on 31 March, and joining late doesn't reduce the fee. Sutton runs each subscription for 12 months from your first collection, so the timing doesn't cost you collections. Richmond currently sells a 6-month subscription from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, at £51 or £38 if you are 75 or over.
How much does it cost to get rid of green waste in London?
For regular cuttings, a council subscription costs from nothing in Wandsworth to £99 per bin in Sutton (checked October 2026). Larger loads can go to the council tip or be cleared in a one-off removal. Across all RubbishBids jobs from 14 April to 9 September 2026, the median bid was £200. These figures cover all job types, not only garden waste.
What happens to my bin if I don't renew?
It depends on the borough. Sutton removes all garden waste bins when a subscription ends, and may charge for repairing or replacing damaged or defaced bins. Southwark doesn't empty brown bins without a valid subscription. To avoid a gap in Sutton, renew within the 30 days before expiry. In Richmond, Direct Debit payers are renewed automatically.
