Merton Bulky Waste Collection Is Now Free — Here’s When That’s Still Not Enough

What Actually Changed on 1 June 2026
Before this date, Merton’s bulky waste collection was a paid council service. From 1 June 2026, the council removed the charge for a limited allowance: each household can now book one collection of up to three bulky items per year at no cost. You still apply through the council’s bulky waste booking process and still need a slot — the change is to the price, not to the need to book ahead.

The Fine Print: Where the Free Scheme Stops
None of the following is a criticism of the scheme — three free items a year is a real saving for most households. But it’s a bounded offer, not an open one, and knowing the boundary in advance saves a wasted booking.
Capped at 3 items
A fourth item doesn't get collected free in the same visit. You'd either leave it behind, pay the council's standard rate for it, or use a licensed carrier instead.
Once per household per year
Move house mid-year, have a second clear-out, or simply need more space again in month 8 — the free allowance has already reset its clock, not you.
Booked, not same-day
You apply and wait for an allocated slot. If you need the space cleared this week — moving day, a sale completing, a new delivery arriving — the council timetable may not fit.
Household bulky items only
