Why Wandsworth Council won't take your construction waste
Wandsworth runs two kerbside collection services. Neither takes construction or demolition waste, and neither is available to builders or tradespeople regardless of what they pay.
Free bulky collection
Covers household items — sofas, mattresses, white goods. Waste from works of construction, demolition or preparatory works is categorically excluded. This is written into the service terms and enforced consistently.

DIY waste collection — £106.70 minimum
Covers some home-improvement waste for residents only. Three standard-size refuse sacks count as one DIY item, so the minimum charge covers up to 12 sacks. A builder or tradesperson has no access to it at any price.

Skip or wait-and-load — what a Wandsworth skip actually costs
The skip hire fee is not the number that surprises builders in Wandsworth. The council fees are.
Skip and materials licence charges
A skip on a public highway needs a council skip licence. A skip on a private driveway needs nothing. Most Wandsworth renovation sites do not have a usable private driveway.

Maximum permitted skip size in Wandsworth: 12 cubic yards. Roll-on/roll-off skips are not licensed in the borough.
Parking bay suspension in a CPZ
67% of the borough is covered by a controlled parking zone. On a CPZ street, a skip licence is not enough — you also need a bay suspension permit: a separate application, minimum 5 days, at £43.40 per day in Tier 1. On some streets the rate is higher.
On red routes through Battersea, Clapham Junction and Tooting, the council cannot issue a skip licence at all — TfL permission is required. On the narrow terrace streets between Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Common, a wait-and-load van removes the permit problem entirely.
When a skip is still the right call
A skip wins for sustained strip-outs — a full Victorian terrace strip-out, a kitchen and two bathrooms over three weeks, a rear extension demolition generating waste continuously. The fixed permit cost amortises across multiple loads.
A wait-and-load van wins for one-off loads, phased clear-outs, and anywhere a bay suspension would apply. The break-even depends on your load rate, not a general rule.

Where we work across the borough

Battersea and Nine Elms
SW8, SW11New-build fit-out, apartment refurbishment and high-density residential. Nine Elms involves restricted access — narrow service roads, goods lifts, very limited kerbside parking. Waste volumes are moderate per job but work is recurring.
Clapham Junction and between the commons
SW11, SW12The terrace grid between Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common generates consistent side-return extensions, kitchen strip-outs and loft conversions. This is where bay suspension costs bite hardest — streets are narrow and CPZ coverage is dense.
Balham and Earlsfield
SW12, SW17, SW18Balham's regeneration has accelerated refurbishment activity. Earlsfield remains predominantly owner-occupied Victorian terrace with an active renovation pipeline. Loft conversions and rear extensions at volume.
Tooting
SW17HMO conversions and bathroom refits are the dominant job type. Building stock includes a high proportion of pre-2000 properties — relevant for asbestos risk (see waste types below).
Southfields and West Putney
SW15, SW18Larger Edwardian houses generate heavier loads — basement excavations, full-house refurbishments. Wider roads and more available frontage make this the strongest area in the borough for skip-suitable jobs.
Roehampton and the Alton Estate
SW15Post-war blocks and social housing refurbishment. Lift-only access in many blocks — loading logistics need to be specified when posting a job.
Construction waste types we cover
Plasterboard
Plasterboard must be segregated from other construction waste before collection. Under the Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2002, gypsum waste cannot be accepted in mixed form at biodegradable landfill — when gypsum contacts organic material it produces hydrogen sulphide gas. Keep plasterboard separate, tell your carrier before collection, and confirm they can accept it segregated. This is your prompt to raise it explicitly when posting your job.
Soil and muckaway
Soil, clay and excavation spoil is priced by weight, not volume. A cubic metre of London clay is not the same cost to move as a cubic metre of granular fill. If your job involves any excavation — rear extension foundations, a basement dig-out, landscaping — post it specifically as a muckaway job and describe the material type.
Mixed C&D waste
Mixed construction and demolition waste covers rubble, timber, metal, insulation and general strip-out debris. Carriers who can segregate loads and send materials to a processor will bid differently from those handling everything as mixed. If you can separate timber and metal on site, say so in your job description — it changes the bids you receive.
Asbestos — stop
Asbestos-containing materials are present in Wandsworth's pre-2000 housing stock: floor tiles, artex ceilings, pipe lagging, roof felt, soffit boards, textured wall coatings. If you suspect ACMs, stop work in that area. General carriers — EA-licensed or otherwise — cannot legally transport notifiable asbestos waste. Engage a licensed asbestos removal contractor. They will survey, produce a materials management plan, and arrange legal disposal.
