Will the shop take my old sofa away when the new one is delivered?
In most cases, not as part of the delivery. None of the five retailers we checked has its own delivery crew remove the old sofa. John Lewis says plainly that its delivery and assembly teams 'can't offer disposal of your old furniture'. DFS's help centre goes further. It says DFS 'does not offer a furniture removal, disposal or recycling service' and points customers to charity donation, council bulky waste collection or a private waste removal company.
Several retailers refer you to a national waste removal partner instead. You book and pay for that separately, and a different team does the collection. It may happen before or after your delivery rather than at the same moment. John Lewis, Furniture Village, Sofology and Msofas all work this way, and DFS's help pages also link to a third-party booking. The table summarises what each retailer's own pages say.
| Retailer | What its own page says | How removal is arranged | Published price | Collection timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DFS | Does not offer removal, disposal or recycling | Suggests charity, council or a private company; help page links to a third-party booking | None from DFS | Set by whoever you book |
| John Lewis | Delivery crews can't offer disposal | Separate paid partner service, only if you bought a sofa or armchair from John Lewis | £109 (1 item) to £309 (5 items) | Not stated on the pages we read |
| Furniture Village | Advertises 'special rates' with its partner | Separate partner booking | No price shown | Same-day service advertised |
| Sofology | Recommends a partner service | Separate partner booking | Not found | Shortly before the new sofa arrives |
| Msofas | Offers partner disposal | Separate partner booking | £111 (1 piece) to £261 (5 pieces) | After delivery or within 24 hours, your choice |
This affects your planning. If you were counting on the delivery team carrying the old sofa out as they bring the new one in, check before you order. You may need to book a second visit or arrange the removal yourself.
How much do furniture retailers charge to remove an old sofa?
Where a retailer publishes a price, it is a fixed fee based on the number of items. John Lewis's page, dated around January 2026, lists £109 for one item up to £309 for five. Corner sofas, and sofa beds with a mattress, count as two items each. Footstools are free when they are part of a larger order. So a corner sofa on its own is charged as two items and costs more than the one-item price.
Msofas publishes a sliding scale for its partner disposal service, shown below. The page is undated, so treat the figures as a guide and confirm the price at checkout.
Msofas partner sofa disposal, by number of pieces
Furniture Village advertises 'special rates' for its customers but shows no price. The Sofology page we found gives no figure either. Most of these retailers use the same removal partner, and its own sofa page lists items from £61 for a two-seater to £101 for a reclining corner, including VAT. The other listed prices are £73 for a three-seater, £81 for a four-seater and £89 for a corner sofa. The same page carries a 'from £99.99' headline. Those figures don't fit together, which suggests a minimum charge or call-out fee, and the page's date is unclear. Check the live price before you rely on it.

What don't retailer take-away services tell you about stairs, dismantling and booking rules?
The published terms are short, and most of the details that cause problems on the day are missing. These are the rules the pages we read do state:
It's a separate booking
The delivery crew doesn't do the removal. You book it with the retailer's partner.
A purchase may be required
The John Lewis service is only for customers who bought a sofa or armchair from John Lewis. It covers the UK except Northern Ireland.
There are item limits
John Lewis's partner collects armchairs, sofas and sofa beds, up to five items per order. Corner sofas, and sofa beds with mattresses, count as two.
Two people collect
A two-person team collects from inside or outside the property.
Timing varies by retailer
Sofology's partner collects shortly before delivery. Msofas lets you choose collection after delivery or within 24 hours of it.
Several things were not covered in any retailer's published terms we found: - whether crews will carry a sofa down several flights of stairs - whether they will dismantle a sofa that won't fit through a door - whether the old sofa has to be in a particular condition - whether collection can happen on the same visit as delivery These points decide whether the job goes smoothly, so get answers before you pay.
How much does sofa removal cost in London if you arrange it yourself?
Arranging removal yourself gives you more control over timing and lets you clear other items in the same visit. Published prices for a single sofa vary with the source and the date. The chart puts the figures from our research side by side. Several are old, so read the note before you use any of them as a budget.
Published sofa removal prices by route (typical, with source dates)
We didn't collect London borough council prices for this guide. Private carrier prices depend on the sofa, the floor it's on and how easy it is to reach. For a fuller breakdown, see our price comparison for removing bulky household items.
RubbishBids platform figures show how much prices for the same job can differ. They cover all job types posted between 14 April and 9 September 2026, from single items to larger clearances. They are not sofa-specific prices.

Gap between lowest and highest bid on jobs with 2+ bids, same period
The last figure is the most useful. On jobs with two or more bids, the median spread between the lowest and highest bid was 50%. That is a good reason to compare bids rather than take the first price you see. In south-west London, our pages on sofa removal in Richmond and sofa removal in Kingston cover local options.
Retailer's removal partner or posting the job yourself?
Retailer's removal partner
- Fixed price by number of items where published, such as £109 for one item at John Lewis
- Often only available if you bought from that retailer
- Collection timing set by the partner: before delivery, after it or within 24 hours, depending on the retailer
- Terms for stairs, access and dismantling aren't spelled out on the pages we read

Can the council collect an old sofa, and how long will you wait?
Council bulky waste collection is one of the three routes DFS suggests for an old sofa. Each borough sets its own prices, item limits and booking lead times. We didn't gather current London figures for this guide, so check your own council's page before you plan around a council collection.
The only council price data in our research is national and old. A waste company's summary from around 2020 put council charges at £23–£63, and said some councils collect for free if you meet their criteria. London boroughs may charge more or less than that, so treat it as background only. Our London council bulky waste collection guide links to borough pages, including Wandsworth's bulky waste collection. For the pros and cons of each route, see council vs private bulky waste collection.

Can I get rid of an old sofa for free in London?
Possibly, if the sofa is in good condition. We found no retailer that removes old sofas for free, but these routes may cost nothing:
Charity collection
DFS says a charity may accept a sofa in good condition with its fire safety label still attached. It names the British Heart Foundation as one that collects furniture.
Council schemes with criteria
The national summary from around 2020 noted that some councils collect free if you meet their criteria. Whether this applies to you depends on your borough's rules.
Giving it away
Offering a usable sofa to neighbours or local reuse groups costs nothing, but someone has to come and collect it. We haven't reviewed specific platforms for this guide.
The catch with free routes is timing and condition. A charity decides whether to accept the sofa, and a free collection may not line up with your delivery. A worn sofa, or one missing its fire label, is unlikely to be accepted for reuse. In that case it needs to go to the council or a licensed carrier.
Can an old sofa go in a skip, and where does it end up?
Retailers describe sofa disposal as a specialist process rather than ordinary rubbish. John Lewis says upholstered furniture can't be recycled, so sofas collected through its service are converted into energy. It says this is done in compliance with regulations. Sofology says sofas collected through its partner go to a specialist sofa recycling facility or an approved Materials Recycling Facility.
Energy recovery
This is what John Lewis describes for upholstered furniture, which it says can't be recycled.
Specialist sofa recycling
One of the two destinations Sofology names for collected sofas.
Approved Materials Recycling Facility
The other destination Sofology names.
Reuse
For sofas in good condition with the fire label attached, through a charity that accepts furniture, as DFS describes.
If you were planning to put the sofa in a skip with other rubbish, ask the skip company first whether it accepts upholstered furniture. This guide doesn't cover the regulations on upholstered seating in detail, so get advice from the skip firm or carrier rather than assuming. Whoever takes the sofa, ask where it's going.
How do you time the old sofa's removal for the day the new one arrives?
The awkward part of replacing a sofa is the gap between the old one leaving and the new one arriving. Retailer partners handle this differently. Sofology's partner collects shortly before the new sofa arrives. Msofas lets you choose collection after delivery or within 24 hours of it. The partner's direct service says it can usually collect the same day or the next day, with morning or afternoon slots.
Planning collection around delivery day
- 1
Confirm the delivery slot
Get the delivery date and time window from the retailer before you book anything else.
- 2
Decide whether the old sofa must go first
If the room or hallway can't hold two sofas, the old one has to leave before the new one arrives. If you have space, collection after delivery is easier.
- 3
Check what the retailer offers
Find out whether it has a removal partner, whether collection is before or after delivery, and the price for your number of items.
- 4
Compare the alternatives
Look up your council's next bulky waste slot. If neither the retailer nor the council fits, post the job so licensed carriers can bid around your timing.
- 5
Clear the route and keep the paperwork
Move rugs and breakables away from the route out. Keep the waste transfer note from whoever takes the sofa.
Don't leave the old sofa on the pavement or in a communal area while you wait for a slot. Keep it indoors until collection, or choose a collection date that fits.
How do you check whoever takes your sofa is a licensed waste carrier?
Whoever takes the sofa should hold a waste carrier licence. That applies whether you use a retailer's partner, a private firm or a man with a van. Our guide to checking a waste carrier's licence shows how to look a business up before you hand anything over.
Ask for the licence details
A legitimate carrier will give you its registration details before the job.
Check them
Confirm the licence is valid and belongs to the business you're dealing with.
Confirm they take upholstered furniture and can reach it
DFS advises checking that a provider accepts that type of furniture and can safely remove it from your property.
Ask where it's going
DFS also suggests choosing a provider that recycles where possible.
Get a waste transfer note
Licensed carriers must issue one. Keep it with your records.
On RubbishBids, the carriers who bid are licensed by the Environment Agency and must issue a waste transfer note. You post photos, your postcode and what needs to go, carriers bid, and you choose. Only the carrier you select receives your contact details. How RubbishBids works explains the process step by step.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it typically cost to have an old sofa removed when a new one is delivered?
Where retailers publish a price, removal is a separate paid booking with a partner, not something the delivery crew does. John Lewis lists £109 for one item up to £309 for five, on a page dated around January 2026. Msofas lists £111 for one piece. DFS says it offers no removal service. Confirm the current price at checkout, as published figures change.
Does DFS take your old sofa away?
Not according to its current help centre, which says DFS does not offer a furniture removal, disposal or recycling service. Instead it suggests three routes: donating to charity if the sofa is in good condition with its fire label, booking a council bulky waste collection, or using a private waste removal company. Older articles quoting a £129 DFS fee are out of date.
Will John Lewis take my old sofa away?
John Lewis's delivery crews can't dispose of old furniture. If you buy a sofa or armchair from John Lewis, it offers a separate paid collection through a partner. Its page, dated around January 2026, lists £109 for one item up to £309 for five. Corner sofas, and sofa beds with mattresses, count as two items. The service covers the UK except Northern Ireland.
How much does sofa removal cost?
Published figures vary widely. A national removal firm's direct page lists £61 for a two-seater up to £101 for a reclining corner, though the page's date is unclear. Retailer-linked services start at about £109 to £111 for one item. We didn't check London council charges, but a national summary from around 2020 put them at £23–£63. Check live prices for your sofa and borough.
Can I get my old sofa removed for free?
Sometimes. DFS says a charity such as the British Heart Foundation may accept a sofa in good condition with its fire safety label attached. A national summary from around 2020 said some councils collect free for residents who meet their criteria, so check your borough's rules. We found no retailer that removes old sofas for free.
How do I find old sofa removal near me in London?
Start with your retailer's removal partner, if it has one, and your borough's bulky waste page. If neither fits your delivery date, post the job on RubbishBids with photos and your postcode, and compare bids from EA-licensed carriers. Only the carrier you select gets your contact details. Whoever takes the sofa must issue a waste transfer note.
