Why the price dropped from £42 to £5 per item
Lewisham used to charge a flat £42 for up to four items, with mattresses at £14 and fridges or freezers at £60 — pricing that sat in the middle of the pack for London councils. The council has since cut this to £5 per item and £25 per fridge or freezer, a reduction it says was made deliberately to tackle fly-tipping, after nearly 40,000 fly-tipping reports in the preceding 12 months. Cabinet member Councillor Louise Krupski said the aim was to make it "cheap, easy and convenient for our residents to dispose of unwanted household items."
Cheaper legal disposal, tougher enforcement
Alongside the price cut, Lewisham increased its maximum fixed penalty for fly-tipping to £1,000 and for littering to £200 — the lower legal price is paired with a real deterrent for illegal dumping.
