Sutton Council Bulky Waste Collection: Costs, the Sofa Surcharge and What They Won't Take

Updated September 2026 · Prices verified 2 September 2026

Sutton Council charges £49 for up to three items of bulky waste, rising to £81.80 for up to six — the borough's maximum. But if any of those items is upholstered furniture, like a sofa, the price jumps to £74. Below is the full price list, the sofa surcharge explained, Sutton's strict no-refund policy, and the long list of items the council refuses outright.

Why a sofa costs £25 more in Sutton

Sofas and other upholstered furniture can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in their foam and fabric — chemicals that require separate, more expensive disposal under UK regulations. Sutton passes that cost straight to you: add a single POPs item to an otherwise standard 1–3 item booking and the price jumps from £49 to £74, a 51% increase that most people only discover once they're already at the checkout.

Sutton Council sofa collection — the real cost

Booking a sofa alongside two other items? That's £74, not £49. Booking a sofa, an armchair and a mattress together with three other items (4–6 total)? That's £122.70, not £81.80. If you're only getting rid of upholstered furniture, a private carrier quote is often close to — or cheaper than — the POPs rate, with no separate surcharge tier to catch you out.

Sutton's no-refund policy — the strictest of the four boroughs

Once you've paid, your booking is final. You cannot change the date or move it to a different slot, and cancelling it does not get you a refund.

If the crew arrives and can't take your items — wrong location, inaccessible, or on the exclusion list — you are still not refunded. You'll need to book, and pay, again.

Of the four South West London boroughs covered on this site, this is the hardest cancellation policy: Kingston, Richmond and Merton all offer some form of recourse when a collection goes wrong. Sutton does not.

Access restrictions

Crews also cannot collect from inside blocks of flats, from back gardens, from garages, or from sheds — items need to be at an accessible point outside the property.

Rubble and construction waste are refused outright. If that's your job, use our rubble weight calculator to work out roughly what you're dealing with before you get quotes from a licensed carrier.

Council collection vs private carrier in Sutton

For a small, non-upholstered load you're confident about, the council can still be the cheaper option. A private carrier earns its cost the moment a sofa is involved, your job is refused outright, or you can't risk a no-refund booking on items you're not sure will be accepted.

Fly-tipping risk

Leaving items out without a booked collection, or in a spot the council doesn't collect from, isn't a grey area — it's fly-tipping, and it's traced back to your address. The same duty of care applies if you use an unlicensed operator to dodge the POPs surcharge. Full fly-tipping penalties and how to avoid them →
