Rubble Removal
in Wandsworth
Wandsworth Council refuses rubble from both its bulky and its paid DIY service. Smugglers Way Household Waste Recycling Centre has a 2-metre height barrier that turns vans away at the gate. The borough licences neither roll-on/roll-off containers nor grab lorries emptying skips — the two cheapest high-volume options available almost everywhere else in London.

Wandsworth removes the two cheapest options for large rubble volumes
Roll-on/roll-off containers are not licensed in Wandsworth. They fail the Builders Skip (Markings) Regulations 1984 and exceed the borough's permitted dimensions. Grab lorries are not permitted to empty a skip anywhere in the borough. Maximum skip size is 8 cubic yards.
For an excavation or a full strip-out, that leaves staged tipper loads or direct grab loading — both arranged by a licensed carrier, with no skip licence, no bay suspension, and no five-working-day wait.
A skip entirely on private land needs no licence at all. If you have a driveway, the calculation changes completely.

What counts as rubble
“Rubble” means inert waste — material that does not decompose, does not react, and goes to an inert tip at the lowest disposal rate. Getting this right is the difference between a cheap job and an expensive one.
| Inert — lowest rate | Not inert — priced separately | Never collected |
|---|---|---|
| Brick and block | Plasterboard and plaster | Asbestos in any form |
| Concrete, including reinforced | Timber and floorboards | Hazardous chemicals |
| Hardcore and MOT Type 1 | Insulation | Gas canisters |
| Stone and paving slabs | Plastic sheeting | Clinical waste |
| Ceramic tiles | Carpet and underlay | |
| As-dug soil and clay | Mixed strip-out waste | |
| Sand and ballast |
Keeping the streams separate is the single biggest lever on price. Sort at source and the bids you receive come down.
Why rubble is priced by weight
Carriers pay tip fees per tonne. One cubic metre of broken brick weighs 1.4–1.6 tonnes — more than the payload of most Luton vans. Use the calculator to estimate your load before you post.
Wandsworth Council will not collect rubble
The council runs two separate collection services. Neither takes construction or demolition waste at any price. The free bulky waste service explicitly excludes waste from works of construction, demolition or preparatory works. The paid DIY waste service — £102.80 minimum — carries the same categorical exclusion.
This is not a capacity issue. It is a statutory exclusion. EA-licensed carriers on RubbishBids will collect it.
Smugglers Way Household Waste Recycling Centre turns vans away
There is a 2-metre height barrier at the entrance to SW18 1JS. Vans are refused at the gate, along with cars over 2 metres and cars with trailers. The site is for Wandsworth residents only — commercial waste disposal is not permitted.
Residents with a car under the height limit can bring small amounts of bricks, soil and rubble with a pre-booked slot. This is not a trade route.
Alternatives for trade rubble disposal:
- Smugglers Way waste transfer station — Smugglers Way, SW18 1JS (pre-booking and photo ID required)
- Cringle Dock — Cringle Street, SW11 8BX (pre-booking and photo ID required)

Where Wandsworth rubble comes from
The borough's housing stock produces predictable rubble jobs, and the tonnage is usually higher than people expect.
| Area | Typical job type |
|---|---|
| Tooting, Earlsfield | Victorian side returns and rear extensions — London clay spoil |
| Balham, Clapham Junction | Bathroom and kitchen strip-outs in converted flats — tile, plaster, old suite |
| Putney, Southfields | Patio lifts, driveway removal, garden landscaping |
| Battersea, Nine Elms | New-build snagging and fit-out breakout |
| Roehampton | Post-war estate refurbishment — asbestos survey required first |
Access shapes the price as much as the tonnage does. Earlsfield and Tooting have narrow terraced streets with controlled parking. Riverside developments in Battersea and Putney have loading-bay windows that need booking. Converted flats in Balham mean the material comes down by hand. Say so in your job description and the bids you receive will hold on the day.
Your rubble stays your responsibility
As the waste producer you are liable if your waste is fly-tipped, even if someone else dumped it and even if you did not know. Fixed penalty notices reach £1,000, and prosecution carries an unlimited fine.
Every carrier on RubbishBids is Environment Agency verified before they can bid, and every job comes with a tip receipt.
